Hullo all. I'm Alan, and I run this place. I've been writing the official Fugue for Thought website since 2013, and producing the podcast since early 2016. They both, for better or worse, revolve a little bit around me as the listener: the blog is my traversal through classical music, and the podcast often reflects experiences I have and people I'm able to meet as a result, but there's also an enormous amount of conversation and discussion to be had about music and enjoying it and thinking about it, so I'm hoping this venture goes over well... Not a musician by any stretch of the imagination. Was a saxophone player (of all things) throughout grade school, but played more clarinet and (very little) bassoon (though it is my favorite) in high school, and only took piano lessons once I moved 9,000 miles away to Asia, and that only lasted for a year or so; would have been quite different if I'd been able to fit a piano in my little apartment. I daylight as an editor/translator and spend as much of that time listening to something as possible. That aside, my musical interests are wide-ranging, and favorites lists are a silly thing, but the music that probably has the highest play counts in my library would be Mahler and Beethoven symphonies, Scriabin sonatas, Milton Babbitt string quartets, Boulez piano sonatas, Chopin ballades, Bach's cello suites, and whatever is in process for the blog at the time. I think the list of 'least favorites' is more interesting, but that's maybe for another thread. Nice to meet everyone.
